Could Nouveau be the future for nVidia hardware?

<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;">Recently it was <a>announced</a> that Microsoft has an agreement with nVidia that gives Microsoft the chance to match any offers of over 30% of nVidia's outstanding shares. This deal effectively allows Microsoft to keep nVidia from being taken over by anybody else other than Microsoft itself.<br /><br />I am usually not a big fan of Microsoft taking over companies, because products are usually twisted to fit Microsoft's plan. For instance I am highly skeptical of Microsoft's plans with Skype. Even though it hasn't happened yet, I am expecting an announcement by Microsoft to drop future development for at least the Linux Skype software. They may keep the Mac version, as Microsoft actively develops other software for the Mac platform anyway. But how many products does Microsoft develop for GNU/Linux? I can probably fit the number on one hand.</span> <span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><a name="more"></a><span style="font-size: small;"><br />I've always been a big fan of nVidia, so when I heard this news I was disappointed that nVidia would agree to this. The bidding (if a takeover was on the plate) should be open to the highest bidder, and no bidder should have an advantage over all of the others like this. nVidia has released quality hardware for years, and probably the biggest win for me is their commitment to develop drivers for Unix and GNU/Linux for their graphics chipsets. This has made the nVidia graphics cards, manufactured by a variety of vendors, very reliable for GNU/Linux specifically. In fact they are so well done that I solely use nVidia graphics cards in all of my machines, because I can count on broad support regardless of the operating system, even though I only use GNU/Linux. Support for other chipsets like ATI just isn't up to par with nVidia based on my experience over the years.</span> <span style="font-size: small;"><br /><br />If Microsoft does in fact have plans to take over nVidia, I just couldn't see Microsoft continuing development of the Unix drivers. If a takeover were to happen, thankfully there is a way out of this. And that is the nouveau drivers that are currently being developed for the Linux kernel, that are truly open source. nVidia still keeps the proprietary Unix driver closed source for some reason. The nouveau project is still young, but advancements have been made which provide basic functionality. 2D support is very good, but 3D support is a work in progress right now. I am guessing it will take years to get nouveau at a point where it can run most 3D applications with ease. Until then, I am hoping that nVidia will not do what 3dfx did and leave its customers in the dark, and allow Microsoft to take over. I was a huge fan of 3dfx back when they were releasing their Voodoo series (even though I was primarily using Windows at the time for my machines), and when they went under it was a terrible loss. 3dfx Glide had superior performance for its time. Thankfully though, open source developers picked up the slack and developed a Glide driver for GNU/Linux. There are also now Glide wrappers for OpenGL (such as </span> <span style="font-size: small;"><a>Sven's Glide wrapper</a> which perform very well. In fact one good use of this wrapper for open source is to use it in Wine (or Windows) on GNU/Linux, which offers excellent performance and support for older games that were written for Glide, like Blizzard's Diablo II.<br /><br />Moving forward I'm confident that open source support and the nouveau project will be very well done for nVidia products, regardless of what Microsoft does. Although it was very simple, it was still the first. It had twelve simple games with graphic overlays. However, there was lots of room for improvement, and that’s where Pong came into play.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Nolan Bushnell created Pong, along with Al Alcorn, the founder of Atari. Rumor has it that when the prototype was tested at a California bar, the machine broke down after two days, because it was so popular. The next logical step was to create a home version. So, one year later, Atari released Pong, complete with built in paddles, and a speaker. Of course, Pong was a huge success and represented a new stage in the evolution of gaming. Over sixty Pong knock-offs would be produced, but Atari dominated the market.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Next was the implementation of the microprocessor, which the entire industry adopted. As a result of this, more complicated systems could be developed. These systems produced groundbreaking and innovative graphical and auditory effects that had never been seen before. Consumers were eating it up. The industry was on fire. In 1981 alone, five billion dollars were spent on video arcade machines and another billion dollars was spent on home video game systems. Atari’s VCS/2600 system remained the dominant player through 1982, when the gaming market experienced a crash.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What were some of the great games? How about Pac Man? Pac Man, the yellow blob that ate up dots and avoided squid-like ghosts, was a worldwide sensation and probably the biggest game of all time.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Space Invaders was another incredibly popular game. In fact, it really marked a turning point for arcade games, bringing them out of bars and into family friendly places like shops and restaurants. The premise of Space Invaders was to stop an alien invasion. This simple formula went on to become the most successful arcade game of all time.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Then there was Super Mario, which was huge as well. It involved an Italian anti-hero who was deliberately designed as a character that everyone could relate to. Soon thereafter came Zelda, Metroid, and other classics.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Rise and Fall of Atari</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Atari was the hottest thing in the gaming world in the early ‘80’s. Today, they are a relic of past glory. So what happened? Atari made some bad decisions, and although it’s a little complicated, it’s helpful to understand the situation. At that time in the computing world, magnetic mediums were implemented in the data storage used in Arcade machines. These mediums allowed for a higher memory capacity than ROM cartridges.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In 1982, Atari had the option to include a disk drive in their systems. The price difference would have been nominal, and the memory capacity would have been significant. Atari, however, thought that magnetic media was too “fragile” for the consumer to adequately handle. Atari's "concern" for the customer backfired on them. In the previous years, there had been a very fine line separating arcade game quality from home game quality. With arcades utilizing storage capacities ten to forty-five times larger than home systems that fine line became a chasm. Arcade games seemed to be evolving exponentially, while home systems seemed "stuck in a time warp.”</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The public quickly became uninterested in video game specific consoles, and sales plummeted.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This would mark the end of Atari's reign of the video game market.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Rise of the New</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In 1984, everything changed. The reason? Two innovations: The reduction in cost of Dynamic RAM (DRAM) chips which allowed more memory, and the production of higher power 8-bit processors, which lowered the prices of the previous chips. Sega, a new player in home gaming systems, entered the console market with their Master System 2. The Sega Master system would sell very well, but its success would be limited.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The other key player was Nintendo of Japan. The genius of Nintendo was their marketing prowess, as they poured millions into advertisements. These advertisements hit consumers at the perfect time, as evidenced in their sales. In fact, Nintendo couldn’t manufacture enough systems to keep up with demand. After all was said and done, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) would become the highest selling system in history. They would also become the most notorious, as they were involved in the intimidation of retailers, competing companies, and other suppliers and partners.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Over the next five years Sega and Nintendo would battle for dominance, going back and forth. My favorite by far were my Star Wars action figures but I spent many hours playing with G. I. Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe. There are so many of them, and they were such a vital part of my childhood experience that I couldn’t really begrudge my sons love of those very same things. <br /><br />His current collection is of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle™ action figures. He is also starting a nice collection of matchbox cars, but he really loves his Ninja Turtles. For a while he was seriously interested in light sabers from Star Wars. Dual-Core Processor Wars: AMD X2 vs Intel Pentium D

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">There's a war going on and the latest battle continues to offer the promise of good prices to consumers looking for the best stuff for their computer.<br /><br />Since the inception of dual-core processors a little while back the race has been on to see who can get the better chip with this dual-core processor technology.<br /><br />During the final days of the single-core battles, there was a stalemate between AMD and Intel. Intel's clocked higher but were unable to match the speeds that the AMD managed at lower clock speeds.</span></div><a name="more"></a><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><br />The oldest difference between them has been their suitability for specific tasks. AMD have had the gaming sector in the bag, especially in terms of the value for money possible with their lower clocked chips, which could be overclocked to the same speeds as their top models. Intel has the crown for general performance. When it comes to office related tasks, Intel processors are able to outperform AMD chips in these areas.<br /><br />As the ability to clock the chips any higher became more and more difficult technically, the next step was to just add another core, theoretically allowing twice as much number crunching in a dual-core processor. This is not exactly how it works however.<br /><br />Modern operating systems and programs have not been designed with multiple-core or dual-core processors in mind. They were designed to make use of one core on one processor. The major expense that went with multiple processor computers was the circuitry needed to split tasks up amongst the processors and sharing cache.<br /><br />Dual-core processors simply act like two places for tasks to go. Instead of single tasks getting split up and performed in two different places, as is the case with traditional single core processors, single threads get split up amongst the cores. This essentially means that each program gets assigned to a core.<br /><br />Because of this there is absolutely no increase in speed for gaming from dual-core processor chips. Only once the games themselves have been programmed to take advantage of dual-core processors will there be a difference. This is due to the intensive nature of games and the number crunching needed for intense graphics, which for now cannot be split over multiple cores in dual-core processors.<br /><br />So back to the battlefield.<br /><br />AMD were the first to introduce their dual-core processor solution to a desktop computer. This gave them a slight lead over Intel. Despite this, AMD gave people a bit of a surprise with their new offering.<br /><br />Always having been renowned for giving far more than expected for the price, these new dual-core processors were very expensive. Part of what managed to give AMD a hold in a market previously dominated by Intel was their good pricing. This shock did not go down well with consumers.<br /><br />To add insult to injury, Intel's dual-core processor offerings came in at remarkably good value. Both of their initial dual-core processors cost less than AMD's lowest priced model. That's right, AMD's cheapest dual-core processor cost more than Intel's most expensive. This definitely put the ball in Intel's court and was downright disappointing for AMD fans.<br /><br />AMD did manage to introduce a cheaper model to compete better with the Intel offerings. Despite this, Intel was still the forerunner in this area.<br /><br />Performance remains an area that is sketchy.<br /><br />With the relatively new technology involved it is hard to draw a clear conclusion on who is faster. With operating systems only recently oriented towards fully utilizing dual-core processor technology, it is still new territory. Both offer increased performance, but as to who will rule the roost, we'll have to see.<br /><br />For the meantime it would probably be advisable to just watch. Being a cautious buyer I prefer to buy into a sure thing, once things have settled down, prices will balance out and all the related technology will be in place. Then we will be able to get a true opinion on where to put your hard earned cash.<br /></span>

The company was awarded a contract to develop a precision timer for the Games. The printer they developed for the Olympics - EP101 is also, where Epson derives its name! It was one of the first printers for electronic calculators to hit the commercial market. It comes in two types Black & White and Color. It has a wide color gamut for both types. The black palette consists of three shades of black- Black, light black and light light black. The color palette consists of the standard cyan, light cyan, magenta, light magenta and yellow. Oh and it has two user exchangeable black ink modes- photo and matte!<br /><br />Now you will wonder what is so special about Ultrachrome K3. A simple comparison between the traditional toner manufacturing process and the ultrachrome K3 process will answer the question - traditional toners were manufactured by grinding the toner particles mechanically to the smallest possible particle size that can be achieved mechanically; now the major disadvantage here is the energy and hence cost. Careful planning will allow the advanced solitaire player to win more than 50% of the games they play though.<br /><br />The trick to winning cruel solitaire is to know when to deal from the talon. When you first start playing cruel solitaire, it seems like dealing from the talon randomly shuffles the cards, but this is not the case. A deal from the talon just redeals the cards in the same order they currently appear.<br /><br />This allows an advanced player to have some knowledge of what will happen when the talon deal is done... which vastly improves the chances of winning every game of cruel solitaire that you play.<br /></span><br /><a name="more"></a><span style="font-size: small;"><br />There are certain easy-to-learn patterns that help with this.<br /><br />If all the stacks to the left of a stack have 4 cards in them before the redeal, then after the redeal, the card that is on top will stay on top.<br /><br />For example, suppose the first 3 stacks appear like this:<br /><br />Stack-A: 4 Cards<br />Stack-B: 4 Cards<br />Stack-C: 5 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.<br /><br />All the stacks before Stack-C have 4 cards in them, so after a redeal, the 5 of Diamonds will still be at the top of Stack-C.<br /><br />This is the same no matter how many cards are in Stack-C. So if the stacks are like this:<br />Stack-A: 4 Cards<br />Stack-B: 4 Cards<br />Stack-C: 2 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.<br /><br />Then the 5 of Diamonds will still be on top of Stack-C after a talon redeal.<br /><br />But if an earlier stack does not have 4 cards in it, then the card will NOT stay on top after a redeal.<br /><br />So if the stacks are like this:<br />Stack-A: 5 Cards<br />Stack-B: 4 Cards<br />Stack-C: 2 Cards with a 5 of Diamonds on top.<br /><br />Then the 5 of Diamonds will NOT be on top of Stack-C after a redeal.<br /><br />Knowing this pattern will give you much greater control over cruel solitaire, and allows for some powerful strategies that will vastly increase your chances of winning.<br /><br />DON'T ALWAYS MOVE CARDS TO THE FOUNDATION...<br /><br />Because of the above pattern, it does not always make sense to move a card to the talon at the first opportunity. Instead, you can keep the card, and just make sure that you don't put any extra cards in the stacks to the left of it. <br /><br />This way, you can keep redealing, to expose new cards, and you will KNOW that the card will always remain in play. Only when you can't make any more moves should you then move the card to the foundation.<br /><br />This gives you the most opportunity to keep playing, without blocking play. And it leads to a general procedure, that you can follow to win a lot more games of cruel solitaire...<br /><br />A GENERAL PROCEDURE TO WIN CRUEL SOLITAIRE...<br /><br />Here is a procedure that will help you to win cruel solitaire. It isn't perfect, and you'll probably make your own alterations to it as you get better at the game, but it shows how to carefully play cruel solitaire to avoid blockages.<br /><br />A - Find the rightmost card that can go onto the talon.<br />B - Do all the moves to the right of that card that you can, starting with highest rank ones<br />C - Redeal<br />D - Go back to A<br /><br />Once there are no more moves that can be made to the right of the card, then move the card in the stack to the foundation, and then redeal, and go back to A.<br /><br />If no cards can play, then order all the cards you can, starting with the highest rank ones, and then redeal.<br /><br />That's it!<br /><br />You can definitely tweak this procedure to make it better, but I've tried to keep it simple here, and it should allow you to play cruel solitaire a lot better than before.
